Lesvos is the birthplace of Odysseas Elytis, the painter Theofilos, Sappfo, Alkaeos , Arion, Mirivilis and many more well known artists.

The capital, Mytilini, is located on the eastern end of the island. With Asia Minor’s coast  being visible and only a few miles away, Mytilini has been a trade center since the ancient times. The latter can also be seen through the rich architectural inheritance observed throughout Mytilini.

Also, the creation and sustainment of a university on the island has greatly contributed to the island’s economy and boosted the differentiality of the night life.

It is not only the beauty of the towns that are worthwhile to see. The somewhat magical combination of mountains and sea, the images one gets from Molivos and Kaloni, the hot springs that are used since the ancient times for curing various diseases and even the rock-covered forest  which attracts many scientists all year round, are only an example of Lesvos’ natural riches.
